Miss Oktoberfest Candidate, Mel Williamson

What inspired you to become a Miss Oktoberfest candidate?
I did it all for the schnitzel!
As much as free Schnitzel is a perk, I was inspired to run for Miss Oktoberfest for a myriad of reasons. First and foremost, Oktoberfest has been an iconic festival of rich tradition and culture for Kitchener-Waterloo, being born and raised in K-W gave me a love for all things local! I also have German heritage, so being involved at this level gave me the opportunity to learn more about the German culture. I wanted to be part of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest in a different way, learning the festival from a new perspective, making new friends, enjoying Bavarian cuisine and experiencing fun events!  I ran so that I could stand as a local ambassador and role model for the full community. Don’t delay, get your polka on!

What was the biggest challenge you had during the competition?
The biggest challenge I had during the competition was having down time. I didn’t see this as a bad thing at all, but I want to inform others to be prepared to eat, sleep and breathe Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest. Leading up to gala night, you’ll have opportunity to attend incredible events with all of your new friends! If you can swing it, go to all of them. Unforgettable memories!

Tell us about your most memorable outing/moment as a Miss Oktoberfest candidate?
One memorable outing was the evening event that all of the candidates attended at the Stampede Corral venue. There, we got to dance with the Transylvania Dancers and ride the mechanical bull. Riding a mechanical bull in a dirndl, after some wobbly polka, is a hoot and a half! Be sure to have your phones or cameras ready!

How did being part of the Miss Oktoberfest competition enhance your personal and professional life?
Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is not only a time for fun outings and great food, but it also brings amazing people together. From the corporate events to the booming festhallen, you’ll have the opportunity to network with many spectacular people.  My network grew immensely during the competition, and lead me to new and strong friendships and business contacts.
